Project Location and Specifications

Royal Gorge Energy Storage is a proposed 50-megawatt (MW) / 200-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system located 5 miles northwest of Cañon City. The project is an electrical grid-connected resource that uses lithium-ion batteries to support the healthy operation of the electrical grid by safely storing excess energy from the grid, then discharging this stored energy back to the grid when folks need it most. Royal Gorge Energy Storage is located on approximately 9 acres of privately owned property in Fremont County, about ½ mile north of Highway 50. It will connect directly into the existing Black Hills Electric West Cañon substation.

How it Works

Battery energy storage systems balance the load on the electrical grid by safely storing excess energy from the grid when excess energy is generated, then discharging this stored energy back to the grid when electricity demand is high. This helps utilities optimize power generation resources, reduce costs, and ensure a reliable supply of electricity to customers.
